The POSCA range includes no fewer than eight sizes and five different tip shapes. The tips are all ultra-hardwearing and perfectly suited to their intended use.

Below we share the best tips to choose for Rock Painting. The very high quality materials used guarantees a stroke that is always perfectly smooth. Take this into consideration and they make for easy use on a rock, however the rock has so many variables – porosity, bumps, angles etc. The pens do have a few quirks to understand as they are PAINT pens not COLOUR IN felt tip pens. We share the know how below.

Here are some tips sizes to choose for Rock Painting.
1. 3m size is the most versitile size to place colour on your rock. It is small enough to get in tight corners as well as providing great coverage to large areas.
2. In Black & White at the very least grab a 1m or a 1mr. These will be for outlining and highlights. Once you get used to using them, you will probably grab the whole colour range like us.
3. If you have extra large areas the 5m size is perfect to colour in .

Posca Pens have a unique valve mechanism that guarantees a perfect seal for the marker.

Helps conserve the paint to not dry out.

The same mechanism is used to prime the POSCA for use.

Helps to saturate the tip as often as necessary during creation.

Stops water from back flushing in to the barrel during nib cleaning.

WATER SOLUBLE – POSCA paint is “water-soluble” It can be diluted to produce a gradient effect and they produce awesome shading effects on rocks.MIXABLE – As long as the paint is wet, colours can be mixed. If the tip is stained, just clean it and re-prime the marker to restore the initial colour.

LAYERABLE– Posca Pens are dense and opaque, this means they are perfect for layering!

Dark colours can be applied over light colours or light colours over dark. This also means you can paint on dark rocks !

Since 1887, the Mitsubishi Pencil Company Ltd of Japan has been manufacturing quality writing instruments. In 1979 they manufactured the world’s first rollerball pen incorporating a metal tip They have many pens under the UNI name, one being our beloved Posca Pens. Here are a few other pens that the UNI produce that are ‘OK’ on rocks. They work… but need alot more care when using them .

Are you looking for those really fine lines that Micron Pens offer? Then grab a pack of UniPin pens. Not that these type pens are great on rocks in any brand but of all the brands this one is the best and darkest in ink colour. REVIEW HERE

Of the paint pen brands that we mention Posca ‘Brush Markers’ are the only brand that are acrylic paint. Gives the colour finish you love but with a brush for different technique. If you want to try them out – they are available here. They are not needed on rocks and have limited colours.
