Today’s tutorial is about painting on
dark rocks .
? Each day I present my tutorial on a salmon colour kashmiri pink rock . The shape, flatness and colour are easy to use for the tutorial for your viewing purposes.
?Many of us have dark rocks! And can’t access the light rocks so I have a variety of tutorials lined up to show you how I manage dark rocks because I also use them . I had not realised how important it was to show them .
? Step 1. I still do not base coat ??‍♀️ this is the step where you have to make a choice and understand why you are doing something .
1. Do you use a quality of coloured paint that is low in quality OR quantity of pigment. It will be translucent and streaky and not bright. It could take up to 10 layers to get a nice coverage of colour.
(Then yes you would need a base)And you really only need a layer of base coat if it’s gesso/chalk/house paint as it’s thick! On a rock it is really important to create the least amount of layers as possible . Getting jostled about and adding the elements they can crack and peel .
On a rock – layers become top heavy and can break away from the rock . I’m talking over weeks and months while different layers cure.
So a quality brand of base paint is more suitable .
2. If you use a quality acrylic paint then it is opaque and you can skip the base . It’s not needed for any other reason ??‍♀️we are working on rocks things are a bit different.
? Why don’t I base? I’m lazy ? I want to paint rocks! Not spend hours on unnecessary layers . Time is important to me . I’d rather have painted more rocks then spend hours on unnecessary layers. I’ve proven to myself over 1000’s of rocks light and dark that I don’t need a base – so I don’t .
Today’s scenario is to show you opaque colours on a dark surface . Over the next week or so I’ll show you all different brands of colours – paint and pens . And different colours of rocks that are more dark based. I will show you what worked out and what did not.
Today I have the steps I took to create on a black rock under each photo . To understand your paints – grab a black rock or paint one black – experiment and see what happens .
Today’s scenario is
Black rock / Posca pens
They are opaque and two layers should be all that is needed depending on the colour .
ie my sunshine yellow is more pastel and touch more white based and it needs only one layer vs the regular yellow that always needs two layers .
? it is important to start understanding and connecting with your tools/supplies for best results.
? if you have questions please ask them here I am happy to help.
? I will show other brands during the week

Draw the design on your rock.  Click on the image below to learn how to draw on Rocks

Colour on your rock – I have just painted a nice even layer. You do not want to paint it to thick. The more layers on the rock the more chance it has of peeling off later as the water in the base evaporates. Click on the image below to find out how best to paint on rocks!

Shading makes all the difference to the end result. Adds depth to the Image.
I use clean water and a size 2 or 4 filbert taklon paintbrush click on the below image to learn the technique – or head to YouTube to watch how I do the shading.
